Indonesia stands out not only as a major player in tuna fishing but also as a globally significant marine biodiversity hotspot. In Indonesia, FADs (Fish Aggregating Devices), called rumpon, are privately owned and deployed offshore by fishers. These FADs are used by semi-industrial fishing vessels targeting tuna (small purse seiners, longliners) as well as by artisanal fisheries (e.g., hand-liners). Monitoring the health status of pelagic species at FADs in Indonesia is a key step for addressing the socio-economic needs of local communities of fishers and contributing to global conservation goals.
